Infantino Remains FIFA President After Executive Backing

Gianni Infantino is set to continue as president of FIFA after receiving the backing of senior executives during a meeting in Morocco on Wednesday. Infantino had convened members of the management board at FIFA's Africa office in Rabat following mounting criticism over his scrapped plan to sell off commercial and event operations to private investors.

European football's governing body, UEFA, said over the weekend that it has lost confidence in Infantino, describing the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal as a "shabby, back room, opaque deal". Much of the criticism has also come from within FIFA itself, including from secretary general Mattias Grofstrom, who attended Wednesday's meeting. In an internal memo sent to FIFA staff on Tuesday, he wrote that the situation is "a sad and reproachable series of events".

However, in a statement released after the meeting, Grofstrom and the management board "reaffirmed their full support" for Infantino as president. This means Infantino will remain at the helm of world football's governing body for the time being, though questions about transparency and governance continue to linger.
