Ingebrigtsen edged out of 5km road gold in Copenhagen

A dramatic finish decided the men's 5km at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, where Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen was unable to hold off a late surge. African 5,000m champion Dawit Seare of Eritrea found extra energy in the closing stretch, passing Ingebrigtsen to take gold in 12 minutes 56 seconds. Eritrean teammate Saymon Amanuel claimed bronze.

For the 26-year-old Ingebrigtsen, whose season has been disrupted by injury, this was only his sixth race of the year. He had won the 5,000m on the track at the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest just eight days earlier. In Copenhagen, the Olympic 5,000m champion looked out of contention until close to the final kilometre, when he pushed to the front, only to be caught and passed by Seare in the race's dying moments.

Amebaw dominant in women's race

Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw, who had won $150,000 for victory in the 5,000m in Budapest just six days before, dominated the women's 5km. She broke away early and won comfortably in 14:41. Kenya's Caroline Gitonga finished second, seven seconds back, while Australia's Rose Davies took bronze. Britain's Hannah Nuttall finished 10th in 15:08.

Surprise mile winners

Germany's Robert Farken pulled off an upset win in the men's mile, overtaking American front-runner Yared Nuguse in the final 100 metres to win in 3:51.80 and claim his first major title. Britain's Jake Heyward finished 11th, setting a personal best on the roads of 3:55.76.

In the women's mile, France's Agathe Guillemot timed her attack perfectly to beat Ethiopia's Freweyni Hailu, winning in 4:22.74 — the fastest road time in the world this year. Kenya's Mirriam Cherop took third, with Britain's Katie Snowden 16th.

The championships continue on Sunday with the half-marathon titles, as part of a two-day running festival in the Danish capital.
