Inguna Grietiņa-Dārziņa steps down after 15 years at the helm of the Latvian Society in Ireland
After two decades of active involvement in the Irish Latvian community and 15 years as chair of the Latvian Society in Ireland, Inguna Grietiņa-Dārziņa is handing over leadership, crediting hundreds of volunteers for building the community.
After 20 years of active participation in the Latvian community in Ireland and 15 years as chairperson of the Latvian Society in Ireland, Inguna Grietiņa-Dārziņa has decided to pass the baton to the next leader. Her long tenure has made her a familiar name in diaspora circles, closely connected with cultural and social life.
For many Latvians abroad, her name is associated with choirs, Latvian schools, cultural festivals and countless initiatives that have helped preserve Latvian identity outside Latvia. Her work has spanned everything from organisational leadership to hands-on cultural involvement, and her experience has inspired many within the community.
Grietiņa-Dārziņa herself, however, stresses that this is not a story about one person. In her view, the most important thing is the community, which has been built thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. It is their contribution that has allowed the society to grow and to maintain a strong link with Latvia. She sees the decision to hand over the leadership as a natural next step in what has been achieved together.
The Latvian Society in Ireland is now entering a new phase, with responsibility being transferred to a new leader. While it is not yet known who will take over the chairperson's role, what is clear is that the work of the community and its volunteers will continue, built on the foundation of many years of experience.
