A signature drive has been launched on the portal "Manabalss.lv" to rename Victory Park in Riga. The initiative seeks to change the park's name, but so far fewer than 2,000 signatures have been collected—the threshold needed for the proposal to be considered by the Riga municipality.

Although the petition has not yet reached its goal, it has sparked a debate about the role of names in shaping collective memory. Experts point out that place names are not merely geographic markers; they carry historical and political meanings that influence collective identity.

Victory Park is one of the largest parks in Riga, and its name is linked to Soviet-era ideology. Supporters of the initiative believe a name change would help shed Soviet legacy and foster a more open society. Opponents argue that history should not be rewritten.

It remains unclear whether the initiative will gather the required number of signatures, but it has already brought public attention to the significance of names and their impact on societal perception.
