Instagram rolls out First Draft tool that automatically trims Reels clips

Meta has introduced a new Instagram feature called First Draft, designed to simplify the editing process for short-form videos used in Reels. The tool automatically detects and trims silences and pauses from clips, allowing creators to spend more time on creative decisions rather than routine cleanup work.

How it works

To use First Draft, users select clips from their Reels Gallery and tap the "First Draft" button. The feature then analyzes the selected footage, trims it accordingly, and arranges the clips on a timeline for playback. From there, users can continue editing within the app or publish the clips directly to their feed or Story. Meta says First Draft will also be usable immediately after shooting new footage within Instagram.

Not billed as AI

Unlike many recent Instagram updates, Meta's announcement of First Draft makes no mention of artificial intelligence. According to The Verge, that's likely because the feature does not actually rely on generative AI technology, and Meta instead classifies it as a "machine learning" tool. This stands out given Instagram's recent wave of AI-driven additions, including the push to integrate Meta AI into direct messages and a feature that lets users prompt Instagram to edit their Stories.

Context

Meta previously launched Edits, a standalone video editing app, in April 2025, featuring a range of AI-powered tools aimed at making Reels production easier. First Draft follows in that direction but takes a more utilitarian approach without leaning on AI branding. Meta has confirmed First Draft will roll out to iOS users first, with no timeline yet given for an Android release.
