Instapaper 10 brings a big update to the classic read-later app

Instapaper, one of the original read-later apps, has received a major update this week. The service, which has changed hands several times over the years, is now led by Brian Donohue, who has been steadily improving it. Version 10 includes a fresh redesign, a significantly better web app, and a range of tools for organizing and reading content.

The Verge’s David Pierce, who tested the release, says Instapaper is once again his go-to recommendation for reading apps, though he still suggests Readwise for power users. The update also adds a new home screen widget.

To mark the launch, Donohue shared his iPhone home screen with The Verge and talked about what he’s building next. One project is Emerald, a Markdown editor for iOS and macOS that focuses on collaboration; Donohue says he has been using it as his main writing tool and is preparing it for beta. He is also involved with Sunflower, a new email client from Bobby Goodlatte and friends, which includes AI features such as inbox summaries and the ability to chat with your email.

Pierce’s weekly newsletter also includes other recommendations, from a new Spider-Man movie and a Halo remake to apps like Pastebot 3 and Spotify’s running mode. He also shared personal news: he is expecting a baby and will be stepping away from the newsletter from mid-August to early October, with Jay Peters taking over.
