On 5 November the Latvian news portal Apollo.lv published a piece in its series "Nozagtā dzīve" ("Stolen Life"): a conversation with a woman named Una, whose daughter Anna experienced physical, sexual and emotional abuse at home for years during her childhood. The headline quotes the mother's answer, "I didn't know," and says the child went away to die. According to the article's introduction, the child reached such despair that death seemed the only way out.
The court ruling
Part of what Anna lived through as a child is documented in a court judgment. In it, her stepfather Edgar was found guilty of crimes against a minor, including sexual violence and cruel treatment of a child.
The conversation with the mother
Two Apollo.lv journalists took part in the interview, one of them a colleague named Mārtiņš. The conversation with Anna's mother lasted more than five hours. More than 20 years have passed since the events, and the journalists asked Una how she herself explains what happened in her home and what role she sees for herself in it.
The excerpt available does not reveal Una's answers in detail, nor does it give the date of the judgment or the sentence imposed. The full interview is available on Apollo.lv.
