iOS 27 beta code suggests Apple could lock apps if iPhone payments are missed
Code in the iOS 27 beta indicates Apple may activate a "Restricted Mode" on financed iPhones when missed payments are detected, blocking nearly all apps except basic functions.
According to a report from 9to5Mac, code found in the iOS 27 beta suggests Apple is developing a feature that would allow the company to activate a “Restricted Mode” on iPhones purchased through financing if payments are missed. This finding follows a Bloomberg story earlier this week claiming Apple is preparing to launch a new “Apple Upgrade” financing program for leasing new devices.
When “Restricted Mode” is enabled, users would lose access to nearly all apps, with only basic functions like the Phone app, Settings, and the App Store remaining usable. The feature uses a new “App Managed Features” system, which allows financing or partner apps to continuously check whether a financed device is in good standing.
In addition, the code includes a “Partner Finance Lock” intended to prevent users from erasing, reselling, or stripping a restricted device for parts. While this lock is part of Find My, it reportedly does not give financing partners access to the phone’s location.
It is important to note that this information comes from a beta version of iOS 27, meaning the code and the “Restricted Mode” itself could be changed or removed before Apple officially releases iOS 27. The “Apple Upgrade” program has also not been officially announced. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
