iOS 27's new Handoff feature lets one number work on two iPhones

Apple has added a new iOS 27 feature called iPhone Handoff that solves a common headache for people who regularly switch between two iPhones. The feature was briefly mentioned at WWDC and detailed further at Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9.

How it works

iPhone Handoff removes the need for separate carrier accounts on two devices when a user wants to share one phone number. After a one-time setup, using it is as simple as unlocking whichever iPhone is currently needed — that device automatically becomes active for calls and texts. The feature also lets payment cards added on one device work on the other, and it integrates smoothly with most apps and iCloud services.

There are limits, though. A paired Apple Watch does not automatically switch between the two iPhones, and some Wallet items, such as IDs and passes, won't function across both devices.

Setup and requirements

Both iPhones need to run iOS 27 or later, be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and be signed into the same Apple Account. One device is designated the primary phone holding the main eSIM, while the other becomes secondary; if both carriers support it, each phone can also keep its own eSIM.

Setup happens under Settings > Cellular, choosing the option to use one number on this iPhone and another. To fully disable Handoff later, users need to contact their carrier directly.

Carrier support still limited

So far, only T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany have confirmed support, with T-Mobile charging an extra $5 monthly fee for the feature. More carriers are expected to add support over time.

Apple suggests the feature could be useful when migrating between an old and new iPhone, when traveling with a cheaper backup device, or for professionals who keep separate phones for work and personal life.
