iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone 17 Pro: What actually changed

Apple's latest Pro-series phones aren't a dramatic overhaul, but they do bring several practical improvements over last year's models.

Design and display

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max keep the same aluminum unibody design and dimensions as their predecessors, though they are heavier — the standard model by 2.4 percent and the Pro Max by nearly 7 percent. Display sizes (6.3 and 6.9 inches) and specs remain unchanged, but the Dynamic Island cutout has shrunk and now supports up to three simultaneous Live Activities, up from two. New color options include Black, Silver, Glacier and a Burgundy finish.

Camera upgrades

The biggest change is the 48-megapixel main camera, which can now vary its aperture between f/1.48 and f/4.0, compared to a fixed aperture on last year's models. New manual controls for shutter speed and white balance, plus an on-screen histogram, have also been added. Rear-camera video recording now supports 4K at up to 60 frames per second. A new feature can also save unprocessed sensor data alongside the finished photo to help verify image authenticity.

Performance and battery

The new A20 Pro chip uses a 2-nanometer process and promises up to 40 percent faster graphics along with double the AI processing power, according to Apple. The internal cooling system has also been updated. Battery life has improved on both models, but the larger Pro Max sees a bigger gain, reaching up to 45 hours of video playback. Charging speed has also increased, reaching a 50 percent charge in about 15 minutes with a compatible adapter.

Overall, the changes feel more like an incremental refinement than a full redesign, meaning iPhone 17 Pro owners have little urgency to upgrade.
