iPhone Duo Will Be First iPhone to Support Apple Pencil

Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo will be the first iPhone to work with the Apple Pencil, though the feature won't be available at launch and requires a specific Pencil model.

The Apple Pencil has always been an iPad-exclusive accessory, never working with Macs or iPhones. That changes with the arrival of the iPhone Duo, Apple's new device that introduces significant hardware and software changes to the iPhone lineup, including support for the stylus.

However, the feature won't work when the iPhone Duo first goes on sale. Apple hasn't shared many details, but Pencil support will arrive through a software update later this year. Since the iPhone Duo is expected to launch with iOS 27.1 in October, Pencil compatibility could come with iOS 27.2 around November.

Only one Pencil model works

Even once the software update lands, users will need a specific version of the accessory — only the Apple Pencil USB-C is compatible with the iPhone Duo. Owners of the Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro won't be able to use those models and would need to buy the compatible one for an extra $79. Apple hasn't explained the reason, but it's likely tied to the iPhone lacking the magnets needed to attach and charge the Pencil the way compatible iPads do. Instead, pairing and charging on the iPhone Duo will require connecting the Pencil via a USB-C cable.

On the plus side, the Apple Pencil will work with both of the iPhone Duo's screens — the larger unfolded display and the outer screen — making it useful for quick notes as well as longer handwritten notes or drawings. Carrying a full-size Apple Pencil alongside a phone may not be the most convenient setup, but the option will exist for those who want it. No other iPhone models will support the Apple Pencil.
