Ipswich secure Portuguese midfielder Florentino from Burnley

Ipswich Town have strengthened their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League by signing defensive midfielder Florentino Luis from Burnley. The 26-year-old Portuguese has agreed a five-year contract at Portman Road, with the transfer fee not disclosed.

Florentino made 31 league appearances for Burnley last season, but the club were relegated from the top flight. Fellow Premier League newcomers Hull City were also reported to be interested in the player.

The midfielder described his move as exciting and said he values the club's vision and the quality of the current squad. He believes he can provide experience and balance between defence and attack. Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil said the signing adds Premier League and European experience, including Champions League appearances, and strengthens his options in central midfield.

Florentino initially joined Burnley on loan from Benfica, with the move made permanent in June after the club met an obligation to buy, reportedly for £20.8 million. He made his Burnley debut in September against Liverpool and became a regular under former manager Scott Parker during the unsuccessful fight against relegation.

Earlier in his career, Florentino helped Benfica win the Primeira Liga in 2019 and 2023 and the Portuguese League Cup in 2025. He played alongside Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez at Benfica. At international level, he has represented Portugal from Under-15 to Under-21.
