Ipswich Town sign World Cup winner Palacios from Leverkusen
Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town have signed Argentina midfielder Exequiel Palacios from Bayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee, making him the first World Cup winner to join the club. The 27-year-old has agreed a four-year deal.
Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Argentina midfielder Exequiel Palacios from German club Bayer Leverkusen, marking the first time a World Cup-winning player has joined the Premier League newcomers. The 27-year-old moved for an undisclosed fee and has put pen to paper on a four-year contract.
Palacios was part of the Argentina squad that lifted the World Cup trophy in 2022 and also reached this summer's tournament final. He has additionally won the Copa America twice with his national team. His only appearance at this year's World Cup came as a starter in Argentina's 3-1 group-stage victory over tournament debutants Jordan.
Eleventh arrival of the summer
The move makes Palacios Ipswich's 11th signing of the current transfer window. Speaking about his move, the midfielder said he was joining a club with great ambition and that he was looking forward to playing football in England and testing himself against some of the best clubs and players in the world.
Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil praised the addition, describing Palacios as a player who has already tasted top-level success by winning the World Cup along with major club honours. O'Neil said that experience would prove valuable as the club continues strengthening its squad through the remainder of the summer window.
