Ali Alkabasi first saw Iraq play in a World Cup on TV when he was 13. Forty years later, he was in the stands at Philadelphia Stadium as his nation faced former champions France. Despite a 3-0 defeat in their second Group I match, Alkabasi said he was grateful to witness Iraq live.

"Seeing Iraq play in the World Cup is enough," he told Al Jazeera. "The result was expected. France are on another level. At least the players tried to build attacks instead of just playing long balls." Fans stood and saluted the team at the final whistle, cheering every attack even with the score at 3-0.

For a country that has faced decades of adversity, Iraq's return to the World Cup brought pure joy. Halah Maykhan, an Iraqi American from Wisconsin, called it a dream come true. "I am so happy and excited. This is a matter of pride for the Iraqi people," she said. She thanked the players for bringing Iraqis together from around the world.

Despite the quality gap, Iraq did not simply defend. They tried to keep possession and play through France's high press. Mohammed Abduljabbar from Texas said, "Their performance was good. Yes, there were mistakes, but also beautiful plays. We are proud of them."

The World Cup journey showcased national unity across sectarian lines. Kurdish and Assyrian flags flew alongside the Iraqi banner. Husam Nafea, who drove four hours from Virginia, said, "Wherever we go, Iraqis are joyous and united. Hopefully, we remain this way."

Heavy rain and thunder halted the match for nearly two hours at half-time. But fan Hassan Raad said, "Rain, sun, freeze, desert – we are here for our guys. The result doesn't matter." Ateka Saleh added, "No matter what happens, they brought us here together to be happy. We are very proud of this team."
