Iran Accuses US of Striking Nuclear Plant, Vows 'Appropriate' Response
Iran warned of retaliation after accusing the United States of attacking the Darkhovin nuclear reactor construction site, which the UN nuclear watchdog said poses no radiation risk due to its early stage.
Iran on Sunday accused the United States of carrying out an airstrike on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant under construction in southern Iran, near the Iraqi border. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran would take 'appropriate measures' to defend its national interests, calling the attack a dangerous act against peaceful infrastructure and holding Washington fully responsible for escalation.
The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization earlier reported the strike on the construction site. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed it was investigating the incident but noted that the plant is at a 'very early stage' of construction, making a radiation leak unlikely. The agency urged military restraint near all nuclear facilities.
The allegation came as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) completed another round of airstrikes against Iran on Sunday, ordered by the commander-in-chief. The strikes were in retaliation for attacks on US military personnel in Jordan. This marked the eighth consecutive night of US air raids on Iranian targets.
