Iran Dropped Plan for Missile Strike on Ukraine After Diplomatic Talks

According to sources cited by the New York Times, Iran had seriously contemplated a retaliatory strike against Ukraine after Ukrainian forces attacked an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea on July 25, killing one crew member. Options under consideration included a strike on a Ukrainian Black Sea port or a symbolic ballistic missile attack on Ukrainian territory with a low-yield warhead designed to send a message without causing major destruction. Any such strike would have risked significant escalation, especially given the strained ties between Kyiv and Tehran, exacerbated by Iran's close partnership with Russia.

However, following intensive diplomatic efforts, Iran decided against retaliation, and the situation has stabilized. On Tuesday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation. Sybiha wrote on X that the call was "candid" and stressed that Ukraine's goal is to prevent unnecessary escalation. He reiterated that the attack on the Iranian ship was unintentional and that Ukraine has no intention of targeting civilian vessels or civilians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously stated on Saturday that Kyiv struck two cargo ships in the Caspian Sea used for transporting military cargo between Iran and Russia. Araghchi, in his X post, said Iran does not seek escalation but made clear that any attack on its citizens or interests is unacceptable and demanded compensation. Tensions between the two countries remain high, as Iran has supplied Russia with Shahed drone technology since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
