Iran Announces Burial Dates for Slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
Iranian authorities have set the burial of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei for July 9, with funeral ceremonies beginning on July 4.

Iranian officials have officially announced the schedule for the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. According to the announcement, the burial will take place on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad. Prior to that, a three-day funeral ceremony will begin in Tehran on July 4, followed by another ceremony in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
Initially, the funeral was planned for March but was postponed due to war. Following Khamenei's death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the new Supreme Leader. Mojtaba himself was wounded in the same airstrikes that killed his father and several other high-ranking Iranian officials.
Iran's Shia theocratic leadership traditionally uses mass funeral events not only to honor the deceased but also to mobilize the population and demonstrate the resilience of the regime against internal and external enemies. Historically, the funeral of General Qasem Soleimani, killed in a U.S. airstrike in 2020, drew around one million mourners. In contrast, the funeral of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, in June 1989, saw approximately 10 million participants – one-sixth of the country's population at the time. Khamenei succeeded Khomeini as the Supreme Leader.
