Iran fires ballistic missiles at UAE again after months-long pause

The UAE said Tuesday its air defenses intercepted two ballistic missiles launched from Iran — the first such attack registered in recent months.

The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday that the country's air defense systems had detected two ballistic missiles fired from Iran. According to a statement posted on the platform "X," one missile fell outside the country's territorial waters, while the second landed within them.

This marks the first recorded missile attack directed at the UAE in recent months. The announcement came roughly two hours after the UAE's Ministry of Interior had sent residents a phone alert warning of a possible missile threat.

Previous warnings

This was the first such alert since a false alarm was issued in June and July, when a warned attack failed to materialize and no missiles struck UAE territory. Before that, the last genuine missile warning in the country had been issued in early May.

In recent weeks, tankers belonging to the UAE's state oil company ADNOC have also repeatedly come under attack.

Context since February

Following the US and Israeli strike on Iran on February 28, the UAE was among the countries hit hardest by Iran's retaliatory response, which involved nearly 3,000 missiles and drones directed at it. In June, the warring sides reached a memorandum of understanding, which has since lapsed. Since that memorandum was signed, the UAE — unlike other Gulf states in the region — had not reported any new attacks on its territory until now.
