Iran Launches Missile Strike on US Military Bases

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iranian territory in an "attempt at a surprise attack" on US troops stationed in the Middle East. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported this in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.

US military officials confirmed that all missiles were successfully intercepted. In a post on social media platform X, CENTCOM stated that US forces in the region "remain vigilant and in a high state of readiness."

Earlier, journalist Barak Ravid from the US outlet Axios, citing his sources, reported that Iran fired missiles at a US military base in Jordan. He noted that this is Tehran's first missile attack on a US base in the region since President Donald Trump halted strikes on Iran.

From July 12 to July 24, the United States conducted nighttime strikes on military targets inside Iran. US military officials said the aim was to weaken Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC, despite a ceasefire framework between Washington and Tehran, repeatedly attacked tankers in this strategically important waterway. Iran also struck the territory of neighboring countries, claiming that US military bases were the targets.

On the night of July 21, Trump threatened the Islamic Republic with "multiple" retaliation for the deaths of US soldiers. Since the new escalation in the Middle East began, CENTCOM reported the deaths of three of its service members.

After July 24, both sides refrained from mutual strikes. According to The New York Times, on that day, the US president met with top advisors and key cabinet members and decided to postpone new large-scale strikes on Iran. The reasons cited by the NYT included the potential depletion of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems and the threat of a global energy and economic crisis.
