Shortest Night of the Year Expected in Latvia

The night from Saturday to Sunday will be the shortest night of the year in Latvia, as the summer solstice occurs at 11:24 a.m. on Sunday. In Riga, the night will last only six hours and eight minutes, while elsewhere it ranges from five hours 48 minutes to six hours 28 minutes.

Shortest Night of the Year Expected in Latvia

The night of June 20-21 will be the shortest night of the year in Latvia. The summer solstice will take place at 11:24 a.m. local time on Sunday, June 21, marking the astronomical start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

According to data from timeanddate.com, the length of the night varies across the country. In the capital, Riga, it will be six hours and eight minutes. The shortest night – five hours and 48 minutes – will occur in the northernmost point of Latvia, in Valmiera Municipality near the Estonian border. The longest night – six hours and 28 minutes – will be in the southernmost point, Augšdaugava Municipality near the borders of Lithuania and Belarus.

The earliest sunrise on Sunday will be in northeastern Latvia: in Pededze Parish, Alūksne Municipality, the sun will rise at 4:10 a.m. The latest sunrise, at 4:48 a.m., will be in the southwestern part of the country, on the coast in Dienvidkurzeme Municipality. In Riga, the solstice sunrise will occur at 4:29 a.m.

After the solstice, nights will gradually become longer and days shorter. On June 22, the day length will decrease by five seconds. By St. Peter's Day (July 12), the sun will shine for five minutes less, and after a month, the day will be an hour shorter. Astronomical summer will continue until September 22.
