IShowSpeed: The Streamer Who Became Gen Z's Sports Broadcaster
Streamer IShowSpeed released a World Cup anthem that FIFA added to its official album. With 55 million subscribers, he blends travel adventures and live streaming, positioning himself as a key voice for young sports fans.

A New World Cup Anthem
Days before the 2026 World Cup, streamer IShowSpeed—real name Darren Watkins Jr.—released the music video “World Cup (Champions),” a song celebrating all 48 teams. It amassed over 7 million views on YouTube in under 24 hours. Following fan demand, FIFA added the track to its official album, recognizing his massive reach.
From Bedroom to Global Stage
Speed began posting on YouTube as a teenager in 2017 but committed to full-time streaming during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns. His early broadcasts focused on soccer and video games, but he gained fame through loud, sometimes controversial antics. Eventually, he shifted from his bedroom to the real world: in 2024 he started travel streams, introducing his young audience to different cultures. He raced a cheetah in South Africa, sparred with Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines, was mobbed by fans in Jamaica and Barbados, and hit 1 million concurrent viewers in Indonesia—a record for an English-speaking streamer since the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing. Last year, he embarked on a 25-state nonstop livestream tour, never turning off the camera.
Streaming as a Sport
Speed describes his streaming style as a genuine sport. In six- to eight-hour streams, he constantly performs activities, burning 3,000 to 5,000 calories per broadcast. He eats up to 7,000 calories to sustain his energy. His mission is to inspire viewers and bring joy and confidence. He has been open about his past: in 2020 he was depressed but found inspiration in the anime “One Piece.” He has spoken out in support of Palestine and insists his message will always be positive.
Future and AI Threats
Speed is not worried about AI replacing streamers, believing people will always crave real human connection. He says he would drop everything to go to space with Elon Musk but refuses to comment on Musk’s controversies. For the World Cup, Speed sees an opportunity to introduce Americans to soccer, which he considers an art form.
