Two teams posted commanding victories in Saturday's National Hockey League (NHL) games as the season got underway.

The New York Islanders gave the New Jersey Devils no chance on home ice, winning 6-0. The first period ended goalless, but the Islanders broke through in the second with three goals from Simon Holmstrom, Braydon Schenn, and Bo Horvat. In the third period, Viktor Eklund, Ondrej Palat, and Casey Cizikas added further goals to seal the result.

Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin was outstanding, stopping all 36 shots he faced to record his 30th career NHL shutout. Devils netminder Nico Daws, by contrast, made 26 saves but could not prevent the loss for his team.

Avalanche keep winning

Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche defeated the St. Louis Blues 6-1 at home, scoring the bulk of their goals within the first two periods. Martin Necas led the way with three points (two goals and an assist). Artturi Lehkonen, Nikolaj Rod, Cale Makar, and Josh Manson each scored once, while Nathan MacKinnon contributed three assists.

The Blues' lone goal came early in the third period, scored by Dalibor Dvorsky, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

Following these results, the Avalanche have started the season with two wins in two games for four points, while the Blues have just two points from two games. The Islanders and Devils have each collected two points in two games so far this season.
