Italy's Iapichino wins European long jump title with seven-metre leap
Italian athlete Larissa Iapichino claimed the European long jump title on Sunday in Birmingham with a seven-metre jump. Latvia was represented by seven athletes at the European Athletics Championships, with Patriks Gailums finishing third and Oskars Grava fifth as the best national results.
At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, a new continental champion was crowned in the women's long jump on Sunday. Italy's Larissa Iapichino took the title with a leap of exactly seven metres. Iapichino had won silver at the previous European Championships, but this time she reached the top of the podium.
Host nation athlete Jazmin Sawyers took second place with a distance of 6.99 metres, while Togo-born French athlete Hilary Kpatcha finished third with 6.98 metres. Portugal's Agate de Souza placed fourth with 6.96 metres, and Germany's Malaika Mihambo, the 2021 Olympic champion and two-time European champion in the event, finished fifth with 6.94 metres.
Latvia's representatives at the championships
Latvia was represented at the European Championships by seven athletes competing in four disciplines. In the javelin throw, the country was represented by Anete Sietiņa, Patriks Gailums and Krišjānis Suntažs, while Valters Kreišs competed in the pole vault and Oskars Grava ran the 200 metres. Latvia was also represented by race walkers Raivo Saulgriezis in the marathon and Modra Liepiņa in the half marathon.
Among the Latvian athletes, Patriks Gailums achieved the best result, finishing third, while Oskars Grava placed fifth. In addition to the athletes, Latvia's delegation included coaches Gints Palameiks, Mareks Ārents, Viktors Lācis, Ilmārs Saulgriezis, Andis Anškins and Modris Liepiņš, as well as physiotherapist Toms Zvonkovs.
The European Championships in Birmingham concluded on Sunday.
