Two people have been detained in Italy on suspicion of spying for Russia, according to a police statement. The suspects leaked information to a Russian intelligence officer, including data from active military personnel.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that there will be no tolerance for those who endanger or risk national security, especially if they hold responsible positions.
Police revealed that the main suspect is a 59-year-old former Italian intelligence agent. He communicated with a Russian intelligence officer who had diplomatic immunity in Italy. The suspect passed on information from six sources, including four active military personnel assigned to posts with high confidentiality levels.
In exchange for the information, the suspect received money. Police did not provide further details about the identity of the second detained person.
