Italy hit by new cost of living protests as soldiers deploy in Milan
Protesters took to the streets of Milan again on Saturday, a week after looting and clashes with police. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced 500 more soldiers for the city and tougher penalties for minors.
Cost of living protests resumed on Saturday in Milan, Italy's northern financial hub, a week after looting and clashes with police marked the previous demonstration. Soldiers were deployed across the city, and luxury boutiques were boarded up.
Government response
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced a series of measures. They include sending an additional 500 soldiers to Milan and introducing tougher penalties for minors. Police said minors made up a large proportion of the violent protesters last week.
Situation in the city centre
Surveillance helicopters circled the central Piazza del Duomo. Soldiers patrolled in groups alongside military vehicles and a water cannon. Some visitors said they would leave the city centre if violence broke out again.
France 24's Rome correspondent, Seema Gupta, reported on the situation.
