Criminal Case Dropped in Latgale Toddler Freezing Death – Mother Dies
The Latgale District Court has terminated the criminal case regarding the death of a two-year-old boy after the accused mother passed away. She had been sentenced to prison for unintentional manslaughter and cruelty.

The Latgale District Court has informed the Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior that the criminal case concerning the death of a two-year-old boy has been terminated because the accused mother has died. The case was returned from the appeals court and is no longer enforceable.
Last year, the Latgale District Court found the woman guilty of unintentional manslaughter and cruelty towards a minor. She was sentenced to two years, nine months and 28 days in prison, with two days already served in detention credited. Additionally, she was ordered to pay €2,900 in compensation to the child's father.
The prosecution had requested a harsher sentence of three years' imprisonment and two years of probation supervision. According to reports, the tragedy occurred on 1 February last year in Lendži parish, Rēzekne municipality. The accused had been consuming alcohol with others and failed to provide adequate supervision for her toddler, resulting in the child freezing to death.
