Publisher Pantaloon launches The Playbill, a subscription service for indie games
Game publisher Pantaloon has launched The Playbill, a subscription service offering unconventional indie video games. The service will not include any games that use generative AI in any form.

Game publisher Pantaloon, which grew out of an indie game curation project, has launched a subscription service called The Playbill. It resembles Xbox Game Pass but focuses on "bold and bizarre" independent titles. Pantaloon founder Jamin Smith says the service will not feature any games that use generative AI in any form.
What is included
The initial lineup includes third-party games such as Buckshot Roulette, Silt, Ex Sanguis and Cabin Factory. They sit alongside Pantaloon's own releases: Sub-Verge, Occlude, It Takes a War, Boxroom, Rolla and the music creation sim Offbeat. Just as Game Pass gives subscribers Xbox's first-party games on day one (except new Call of Duty titles), The Playbill subscribers get Pantaloon's own games as soon as they launch.
The service also has a timed exclusive, Virtue: Prologue, a visual novella companion to Virtue and a Sledgehammer, due out next week. A section called the Green Room offers demos, playtests and "abandoned prototypes", including playtests for Isle Goblin, Mr Magpie's Harmless Card Game and Lemonade Apocalypse.
Smith says the model lowers the barrier for players to try genres that Steam's market-shaping algorithms might not surface. In his words, The Playbill is a celebration of the craft of making games.
Subscription terms
Pantaloon moved into publishing after building an audience of more than 50,000 newsletter subscribers, who could solve puzzles to earn game keys or pay for codes. The puzzles, community features, Virtue: Prologue and a couple of ARGs (alternate reality games) are free on the service.
The full lineup is available through a Primo subscription, priced at $5 per month or $60 per year. The service is key-based, so Pantaloon will rotate games out when keys run out and will add new titles regularly. Annual subscribers get all 13 games in the initial lineup plus every new addition. Monthly subscribers get one guaranteed game per month and cannot choose which, because the monthly titles are part of bespoke partnerships. After six consecutive months, they can access all games. Smith described this as a mechanism to stop someone from getting all 14 titles at once and then canceling.
