New Insights into the School Youth Festival Tradition

Two significant publications have entered Latvia's cultural landscape, focusing on the history and development of the School Youth Song and Dance Festival. The collective monograph entitled "Skolu jaunatnes dziesmu un deju svētki. Vēsture un personības" (School Youth Song and Dance Festival. History and Personalities) and the interview collection "Atbalsis. Atmiņas un vērtējumi" (Echoes. Memories and Evaluations) provide an opportunity to explore the multifaceted journey of this tradition over time.

Both books have been compiled by Ilze Šarkovska-Liepiņa, a researcher at the University of Latvia Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art and a musicologist. She emphasizes that the publications are created in a three-dimensional context – space, time, and people. This approach allows readers to see not only the chronology of events but also the role of individuals and how the festival reflects societal changes.

The monograph collects research articles on the historical phases of the festival, outstanding conductors, choreographers, and organizers. Meanwhile, the interview collection contains memories and evaluations from people who have been part of these festivals, both as participants and organizers. Together, the two books form a comprehensive story of the School Youth Song and Dance Festival tradition in Latvia.
