Linux 7.3 kernel released with improvements for AMD graphics cards and the ext4 file system

Linus Torvalds has officially announced the Linux 7.3 kernel, which is expected to become the next long-term support release. It brings performance improvements for AMD graphics cards, the ext4 file system and CPU time allocation.

Linus Torvalds, who leads development of the Linux kernel, has officially announced the new Linux 7.3 kernel version. The kernel is the core part of an operating system, linking software with the computer's hardware. This release is expected to become the next long-term support (LTS) version, meaning one intended to receive updates over an extended period.

Main improvements

The update introduces significant performance gains in several areas. Particular attention has been paid to gaming performance on AMD graphics cards that have a limited amount of video memory.

Read and write speeds have also been improved in the ext4 file system, a widely used method on Linux systems for organizing files stored on disks.

Another change affects how CPU time is divided among background processes, that is, programs that run without direct user involvement.
