The Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) is planning to dissolve the national "Study in Latvia" initiative starting next year. Until now, this initiative has been responsible for promoting study opportunities in Latvia abroad and coordinating the admission of foreign students to Latvian universities.

Ministry to absorb the functions

Most of the initiative's current tasks are set to be transferred to the ministry itself. This means IZM would take direct responsibility for foreign student recruitment and other duties previously handled by "Study in Latvia."

Universities' concerns

Universities that have relied on the initiative's support in attracting international students hope the changes will not diminish the progress made so far. The initiative has been regarded as a success story in bringing foreign students to Latvia's higher education institutions.

It remains unclear whether the decision is connected to calls from some governing politicians to limit migration, as the source article does not provide an official explanation for the reasons behind the change.
