Ministry Advances Unified Foreign Student Admission Rules Based on LU Model
Latvia's Ministry of Education and Science is pushing new regulations that would standardize foreign student admission across all universities, using the University of Latvia's model, which experts warn could harm higher education exports.
The Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) is advancing new Cabinet regulations that would impose uniform admission requirements for foreign students at all Latvian higher education institutions, both public and private. The changes are modeled after the current admission system at the University of Latvia (LU).
The proposed unification is intended to ensure equal conditions. However, industry representatives warn that such a move could significantly damage the export of higher education. It is predicted that stricter and standardized criteria will reduce the number of international students choosing to study in Latvia.
The new regulations have not yet been approved, but their advancement signals a trend toward centralizing and harmonizing the admission process. Opponents emphasize that each university has its own specificity and that a uniform approach may hinder the flexibility needed to attract foreign students.
