Audacity 4 launches with major overhaul of editing workflow and design

Audacity, the free audio editing and recording software often described as the world's most popular tool of its kind, has released version 4 after a lengthy development period. The rollout follows a minor controversy last year when an unpolished early version of the app's new logo leaked online in October; the final logo design turned out considerably better than that early rendition.

Non-destructive editing

The most significant change in Audacity 4 is a shift to non-destructive editing. Users can now trim a clip and later recover the removed audio simply by dragging the clip's edge back out, rather than losing that material permanently. Clips can also overlap, allowing audio to be pasted into a track even when there isn't enough open space, with adjustments made afterward, or dragged freely along the timeline. Previously, attempting to move a clip past another one on the timeline would simply stop it in place, forcing users to cut and paste the clip elsewhere instead.

Additional new features

The update also allows clips to be split, making it easier to chop up and rearrange audio segments. Developers refreshed the clip envelope tools and built-in effects, and added a new home screen with reorganized project management. Audacity's appearance has also been overhauled, bringing it visually closer to other products from developer Muse, such as Muse Score and Audio.com, and now includes customizable themes.

Audacity has remained a staple in many users' audio toolkits since its debut in 2000, but its design and layout had stayed largely unchanged over the years even as new features were added, sometimes awkwardly. This overhaul in version 4 moves the software much closer to functioning like a modern digital audio workstation (DAW).
