Israel Carries Out Airstrike in Southern Lebanon Amid Fragile Ceasefire Deal

The Israeli military struck Nabatieh province in southern Lebanon, targeting suspected terrorists. The attack came a day after Israel and Lebanon signed a US-brokered framework agreement, which was rejected by the Hezbollah leader as capitulation.

On Saturday, June 27, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike in the Nabatieh province of southern Lebanon. According to an IDF spokesperson, the target was suspected terrorists who posed a threat to Israeli soldiers. The military is currently assessing the results of the strike.

The operation occurred just one day after Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement, mediated by the United States. The document provides for a partial withdrawal of IDF forces from two areas north and south of the Litani River. The Lebanese army, with the assistance of U.S. troops, will assume control of these zones as pilot projects.

Shortly after the signing, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the IDF will not leave the 'security zone' it established in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah disarms and the threat to Israel ceases.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qasim rejected the agreement, describing it as a capitulation to Israel. He accused Beirut of making unilateral concessions and undermining Lebanese sovereignty. Qasim argued that linking an Israeli withdrawal to Hezbollah's disarmament crosses 'all red lines' and effectively legitimizes the Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon.

It is worth noting that the U.S. and Israel have been waging war against Iran since February 28. Hezbollah, supported by Tehran, joined the fighting in March by launching an aerial attack on Israel, which responded with a military operation on Lebanese soil. In April, Washington and Tehran agreed on a two-week ceasefire, which was subsequently extended multiple times. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect in June but was soon violated.
