Basketball club Riga Zeļļi, together with retailer Rimi Latvia, has launched a new nationwide competition called the Rimi School Super Cup 2026, aimed at young basketball players from Latvia's general education schools.

Teams from grades 1 through 5, made up of students up to 13 years old, are invited to take part from across the country. Competitions will be held in six regions — Riga, Pārdaugava, Zemgale, Vidzeme, Kurzeme and Latgale — with the strongest team from each region earning a place in the grand final.

Final at Xiaomi Arena

The final tournament will take place on December 6 at Xiaomi Arena, bringing together eight teams: the six regional winners plus two Wild Card teams chosen by organizers for standing out both on the court and on social media.

Rimi Latvia's head of external communications, Everita Bičkova, said the initiative aims to spark children's enthusiasm for basketball and an active lifestyle while strengthening teamwork and a sense of belonging to their school. Riga Zeļļi president Edgars Buļs added that the club, which will soon compete on the European stage, wants to show children that the path to top-level basketball can begin right in their own school gym.

How to register

Schools must submit a registration form by 18:00 on September 28. Teams must also produce a creative video at least 15 seconds long introducing themselves and their school, including the slogan "We want to play in the arena!" The video must be posted on social media with the hashtag #RimiSuperkauss, tagging Riga Zeļļi and Rimi Latvia, and the link then emailed to organizers along with the school's name.

A draw on September 29 will determine each region's matchups and game order. Full competition rules are available on the Riga Zeļļi website.
