Exhibition honors painter Raimonds Staprāns on his centenary

This year marks one hundred years since the birth of painter and playwright Raimonds Staprāns. An exhibition dedicated to him, titled 'Architecture of Silence,' offers the public a chance to explore the many facets of his personality and creative output.

Staprāns was born in 1926 in Riga but spent most of his life in San Francisco, where he passed away in January of this year. He considered both cities — his native Riga and San Francisco, where he lived for most of his later years — to be home, embodying in a sense a dual sense of belonging.

A multifaceted personality

Staprāns was a contradictory and versatile creative figure, working simultaneously as a realist and an abstractionist in painting. His creative process was unhurried — both his painting and his playwriting were marked by a slow, deliberate approach. He was also known for frequent doubt, yet this did not prevent him from producing an extensive and varied body of work.

Exhibition open until January

The exhibition 'Architecture of Silence,' dedicated to Staprāns' centenary, allows visitors to discover both his painting and his playwriting legacy. It will remain open to the public until January 17 of next year.
