Jānis Jurkāns celebrates his 80th birthday, living in love and good physical shape

Jānis Jurkāns, the first foreign minister of restored Latvia, celebrated his 80th birthday on August 31. The celebration program was arranged by his wife, writer and university lecturer Linda Apse.

Staying active

Jurkāns continues to lead an active lifestyle. During his last five years living in Spain, he devoted himself to golf, and since returning to Latvia this summer, he regularly goes to the gym, either alone or with his wife. He says physical activity gives him a sense of being ready to face any challenge.

Back in Latvia

Since returning from Spain, Jurkāns says he feels at home, noting with satisfaction that people around him speak Latvian and that Riga's buildings are well maintained.

A relationship built on love

Jānis and Linda have been together for 17 years and, according to the couple, have never had a serious argument. They have also weathered periods of living apart. Although Jurkāns is 25 years older than his wife, the couple does not see this as an obstacle to a happy life together. Jurkāns says it took courage to marry a younger, educated and intelligent woman, and describes their life together as a gift of fate.

Family celebration

The birthday morning began with congratulations from his wife. The celebration continued at the home of Linda's daughter, where the family had set a festive table — notably, Linda's daughter shares the same birthday. Linda said her children hold Jurkāns in high regard and wished her husband health and joy in life.
