Record Number of Drunk Drivers Caught During Midsummer Holidays
This year during the Līgo and Jāņi celebrations, Latvian police have detained more drunk drivers than in the previous two years combined. Authorities cite misconceptions about alcohol metabolism and hopes of reduced police presence.

Latvian police have reported a significant increase in the number of drunk drivers caught during this year's Midsummer holidays compared to the previous two years. During the intensified roadside checks on Līgo and Jāņi days, officers found that many motorists continue to drive under the influence of alcohol, despite long-standing warnings.
According to police officials, some drivers mistakenly believe that alcohol leaves the body more quickly than it actually does. Others hope that police presence on the roads will decrease after the holiday period, leading them to take risks. However, law enforcement emphasizes that checks are ongoing even today – the day after Jāņi – to prevent potential accidents.
The total number of apprehended drunk drivers this year exceeds the combined figures for the previous two years, indicating a worrying trend. Experts remind that even small amounts of alcohol significantly impair reaction time and increase the risk of crashes. Police urge all drivers to act responsibly and never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
