Elon Musk's Ex-Partners Deliver the Sharpest Blows in New Documentary

A new nearly four-hour documentary by Alex Gibney chronicles Elon Musk's rise, but the most striking testimony comes from women who had children with him. The film's release coincides with Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis publicly announcing an abrupt end to her relationship with Musk.

On Friday morning, Shivon Zilis, a senior executive at Musk's brain-implant company Neuralink and mother of four of his children, announced on X that her relationship with Musk had ended abruptly, after he unfollowed her on the platform. Zilis wrote that she was glad to have shown Musk what it felt like to be understood and cared for, and expressed hope that the two could remain friends and co-parents.

This is just the latest chapter in Musk's famously complicated personal life. All four women confirmed to have had children with him — Zilis, ex-wife Justine Wilson, Claire Boucher (Grimes), and Ashley St. Clair — have at various points used X to speak publicly about their experiences with him.

Documentary adds new details

Director Alex Gibney's nearly four-hour documentary, Musk, opening in theaters October 16, traces Musk's career from ambitions of colonizing Mars to fatal crashes involving Tesla's 'self-driving' cars and the dismantling of USAID under the Department of Government Efficiency. The film includes interviews with WIRED journalists, among others.

Wilson and St. Clair offer some of the most emotional testimony. Wilson speaks about the loss of their firstborn son and the pain caused by Musk's repeated remarks about their transgender daughter. St. Clair claims she turned down a $40 million nondisclosure agreement, and alleges Musk lost interest in her after she became pregnant and later reduced financial support for their son. Both women describe discomfort with Musk's stated views on birth rates and his desire to father many children.
