New exhibition “Livonian Castles” reveals medieval daily life at Riga Castle
Starting June 17, the National History Museum in the vaults of Riga Castle will host the exhibition “Livonian Castles”, dispelling myths about medieval castle life and showing the real everyday existence.

The National History Museum invites visitors to a new permanent exhibition titled “Livonian Castles”, opening on June 17 in the vaulted cellars of Riga Castle. The exhibition focuses on life in medieval castles, which today are often romanticized or surrounded by legends. Museum experts aim to show what daily life really looked like – not only knights and feasts, but also work routines, household chores, and the challenges faced by castle inhabitants.
Visitors will explore various aspects of Livonian castles, from architecture and defense to social structure and everyday habits. The exhibition promises an educational experience for both schoolchildren and adults who wish to learn more about Latvia‘s history. The museum says guests will see authentic artifacts as well as interactive elements that help understand the medieval lifestyle.
“Livonian Castles” is part of a broader narrative about Latvia’s history and will complement the museum’s existing offerings. It will be accessible during regular museum hours, with admission following the standard pricing.
