New Unity stresses rule of law and Euro-Atlantic course ahead of elections

Ahead of the upcoming Saeima elections, the political alliance "New Unity" has outlined its core principles, which took shape when three parties merged to form the movement.

Rule of law as a founding principle

The alliance states it emerged during a period of oligarchic influence in Latvia, founded on two main principles — rule of law and justice. According to the party, these principles continue to guide its actions today. New Unity emphasizes strengthening Latvia's cultural and linguistic space as the foundation of national identity, alongside support for modern digital solutions in public administration and responsible management of state finances.

Belonging to the EU and NATO

New Unity reaffirms its longstanding commitment to Latvia's Euro-Atlantic orientation, highlighting its membership in the European People's Party (EPP), the largest political family in Europe. As an example of successful representation of Latvia's interests, the party cites former Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš's negotiations on European funds, which secured nearly 10 billion euros for Latvia's development instead of the originally planned six billion.

Support for Ukraine and defense

The alliance notes that a Canadian-led NATO multinational brigade is stationed in Latvia, with 13 allied nations participating, including Spain, Denmark and Sweden. Since 2022, Latvia's total support for Ukraine has exceeded 1% of GDP, while at least 0.25% of GDP is allocated annually to military assistance. The party recalls that Latvia delivered Stinger air defense systems to Ukraine before Russia's invasion, and that Ukraine's combat experience is now being applied to modernize the National Armed Forces under Defense Minister Raivis Meļņiks.
