BMW has released images and technical details of the fifth-generation X5 (G65), promising that it will hit the market in late 2026. The model follows the Neue Klasse design language and for the first time offers five powertrain types in one body: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and later a hydrogen variant.

The new X5 measures 4.99 meters in length, 2.0 meters in width, and 1.75 meters in height, with a wheelbase increased to 3035 mm. It features an illuminated kidney grille, new LED headlights with a four-X graphic pattern, and aerodynamic door handles integrated into the window frames. The drag coefficient is 0.28.

The powertrain lineup is one of the broadest in its segment. The electric iX5 60 xDrive produces 578 hp and 805 Nm, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, and can travel up to 845 km (WLTP) on a 141 kWh battery. The 800-volt electrical system supports charging at up to 460 kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in about 23 minutes. The petrol X5 40 xDrive is equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and a mild hybrid system, delivering 400 hp and 580 Nm. The diesel X5 40d xDrive offers 313 hp and 670 Nm, with an average fuel consumption of 7.0-7.3 L/100 km. The plug-in hybrid range includes the X5 50e xDrive with 489 hp and the X5 M60e xDrive with 612 hp and 800 Nm, accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Both hybrids feature a 26.5 kWh battery. A hydrogen version is planned for 2028, with an estimated range of around 750 km.

The interior eliminates the traditional iDrive controller and most physical buttons, replaced by a 1.1-meter-wide BMW Panoramic Vision touch projection across the windshield, tactile touch surfaces below the glass on the steering wheel (and elsewhere), a 17.9-inch central touchscreen with BMW Operating System X, and an optional 14.6-inch passenger display. The cargo capacity is up to 1850 liters, dropping to 1680 liters for plug-in hybrids.

Standard equipment includes adaptive suspension, with optional two-axle air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and active body stabilization. Electric and hydrogen versions use the new Heart of Joy control system, which coordinates drivetrain, braking, and stability control faster than previous-generation electronics. The doors open electrically, with sensors ensuring they stop if a cyclist or vehicle approaches. Level 2 autonomous driving assists with parking and maneuvers in tight spaces.

Production will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the USA. Petrol and diesel models will be available in Europe from November 2026, with electric and plug-in hybrid versions arriving in early 2027. The hydrogen model will follow in 2028. Pricing starts at €98,800 for the X5 40 xDrive, €102,800 for the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, and €125,000 for the 612-hp X5 M60e xDrive.
