The next-generation BMW X5 is nearing completion of its development and testing phase in the United States, with its official unveiling expected within the coming weeks. This fifth-generation model will boast the most extensive lineup of powertrain options ever offered by BMW.

Customers will be able to choose from gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and hydrogen fuel cell variants. The first to hit the market will be the electric BMW iX5, equipped with next-generation eDrive technology, an 800-volt architecture, and the largest battery ever installed in a BMW electric vehicle. In 2028, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen is planned for launch, featuring a third-generation fuel cell system and a new hydrogen storage technology.

The new X5 will incorporate the "Heart of Joy" control system, capable of processing data about the drivetrain, brakes, and steering much faster than current systems. This will enhance handling, comfort, and energy recuperation during braking. The vehicle will also feature a new suspension, wheel options up to 23 inches, adaptive dampers, and a near-perfect weight distribution between the axles. Electric and plug-in hybrid versions will offer air suspension, active stabilisation, and all-wheel steering.

Driver assistance systems have been significantly improved. They will meet the SAE Level 2 autonomy standard, providing assistance on highways and in city driving. The systems can recognise the driver's intentions, assist with lane keeping, collision avoidance, and automatic braking in hazardous situations.
