Upcoming touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro reportedly much lighter

Apple's next MacBook Pro, expected to debut next month with a touchscreen OLED display, is reportedly significantly lighter than current models thanks to redesigned, more compact internals. The device could mark an early hardware milestone under new Apple product chief John Ternus.

Apple's upcoming MacBook Pro, which is expected to introduce both OLED display technology and touchscreen support, will reportedly also be noticeably lighter than today's models. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the weight reduction comes from Apple miniaturizing internal components and rearranging how they're laid out inside the chassis.

It isn't yet clear exactly how the new laptop's internals will be organized, but earlier reporting indicated the machine will use the existing higher-end M5 chip rather than the forthcoming M7 chip, which isn't expected until early 2027.

Gurman reiterated that the touchscreen, OLED-equipped MacBook Pro is still on track to launch next month. It's expected to arrive alongside the first OLED-equipped iPad mini.

Current weights

Today's MacBook Pro lineup starts at 3.4 pounds for the 14-inch model and reaches up to 4.7 pounds for the 16-inch version. A significantly lighter build for the new touchscreen OLED model would represent a notable shift in the line's design.

A design-focused era

The redesign could also serve as an early signal of direction under John Ternus, who recently became Apple's CEO. Unlike his predecessor, who was known for strength in supply chain and logistics management, Ternus brings a background as a hardware engineer and, per Gurman, may bring renewed focus to product design. Gurman noted that rebuilding Apple's design teams — which now report directly to Ternus — was among the new CEO's first priorities.
