Number of newborns in Latvia decreases by 4.5% in five months
In the first five months of 2026, fewer babies were born in Latvia, while the number of deaths increased, according to latest data.

According to data compiled by Dienas Bizness, in the first five months of 2026, 4,589 newborns were registered in Latvia, a decrease of 4.5% compared to the same period in 2025. Of these, 2,323 were boys (down 6.6% or 164) and 2,266 were girls (down 2.2% or 52).
In May alone, 947 newborns were registered – 3.1% or 30 fewer than a year earlier, including 477 boys and 470 girls.
The number of deaths in the five months reached 11,448, an increase of 1.9% or 215 compared to the first five months of 2025. As a result, the natural increase was negative – deaths exceeded births by 6,859 (compared to a difference of 6,428 in 2025).
The number of marriages also declined: in the first five months of 2026, 2,396 marriages were registered, a decrease of 19.8% or 591 marriages from 2025.
The provisional population of Latvia as of June 1 this year was 1.833 million.
