The Latvian news portal La.lv has released a new knowledge quiz centred on classic Latvian literature. The quiz is built on the idea that nearly every literary work hides a symbolic object or detail — whether a brick, an old carriage, or a red kerchief.

How the quiz works

Participants are shown nine different objects, items or symbols that appear in works by well-known Latvian authors and must figure out which work each one comes from. According to the quiz's creators, a good result means correctly identifying at least seven out of the nine items.

The opening question

As an example, the first item presented is the symbol of "bear's ears," and readers must choose which of three works it belongs to: Rainis's play "Spēlēju, dancoju," Andrejs Pumpurs's epic "Lāčplēsis," or Garlieb Merkel's work "Latvieši" (The Latvians). This is the first of nine questions in the quiz.

The quiz is aimed at anyone wishing to test their familiarity with major works of Latvian literature and the distinctive details that define them.
