New Zealand schoolchildren bake Latvian pies and learn Latvian – teacher Līva Ozola promotes Latvia
At Ohakune Primary School in New Zealand, teacher Līva Ozola teaches children to bake Latvian pies and introduces them to Latvian culture.

In the small town of Ohakune on New Zealand's North Island, a Latvian teacher named Līva Ozola has been introducing local children to Latvian culture for two years. In her cooking classes, she teaches students to make Latvian pies, adapting her grandmother's recipe so it can be completed within a single lesson. The pies are locally called "bacon buns," an anglicized name reflecting the local palate.
The students enthusiastically learn not only the techniques of making pies but also how to pronounce Latvian words, such as greetings. Ozola says the children love learning about her homeland, and she hopes this experience helps increase Latvia's visibility worldwide.
