Jelgava steps up road safety measures as school year begins
As the new school year starts, Jelgava municipal and State police will patrol near schools for two weeks, while a temporary speed limit is in place near the "Junda" youth centre until 14 September. Police are urging parents to review traffic rules with their children.
The Jelgava municipality has introduced additional road safety measures for the start of the new school year. Near the "Junda" creative activity centre at Zemgales prospekts 7, a temporary maximum speed limit of 40 km/h applies from 25 August to 14 September.
At other educational institutions across the city, permanent speed limit signs are already in place, and speed bumps have been built in several locations, reducing the maximum speed to 30 or 20 km/h.
Increased police presence
As in previous years, Jelgava municipal police, working together with the State Police, will be stationed near schools for two weeks at the start of the school year. During this period, special attention will be paid to compliance with traffic rules near educational institutions.
Police emphasize that children's safety on the way to school or kindergarten is primarily the responsibility of parents, and are calling on families to go over key traffic rules with their children — including crossing streets only at pedestrian crossings or in accordance with traffic light signals.
