Motorcycle parade in Jelgava ends in crash, several riders injured
A collision during Saturday's season-closing motorcycle parade in Jelgava left at least three people injured, though none seriously, prompting extended traffic restrictions in the city center.
An accident during a large motorcycle parade in Jelgava on Saturday forced the city council to extend traffic restrictions on Lielā Street between the Lielupe and Driksa bridges. The municipality announced the closure on social media, noting that traffic across the bridges would resume once parade participants had moved past the area near Jelgava Castle and the road was cleared.
How the crash unfolded
According to the State Police, a report came in around 1:30 p.m. about a collision between two participants of the motorcycle ride. As officers continued examining the scene, a fuller picture emerged: a tricycle driver had clipped two police motorcycles that had been parked in the middle of the road to separate the flow of riders. The tricycle then crossed into the oncoming lane of motorcyclists, causing a collision with another rider.
Both the tricycle driver and the other motorcyclist involved were injured; the motorcyclist may have been carrying a passenger at the time. In addition, another injured person was found near the scene, apparently affected indirectly by the crash.
The State Emergency Medical Service confirmed that three people received medical assistance, with one of them taken to a hospital. Medics reported that none of the injuries were severe.
Context of the event
The crash occurred as more than 3,000 motorcyclists from across Latvia gathered in Jelgava for the annual end-of-season ride. Participants began assembling near Jelgava Castle from 10 a.m., with the parade setting off at 1 p.m. along a designated route through the city center. The gathering coincided with a music festival and other events marking the close of the autumn season, drawing additional visitors to the city.
