Jelgava to hold last night lantern walks of the season to see wild horses
The Jelgava Regional Tourism Centre will host the season's final night lantern walks through Pilssala on September 12 and 26, letting visitors observe wild horses grazing in the Lielupe floodplain meadows. Spots are limited, so early registration is advised.
The Jelgava Regional Tourism Centre (JRTC) has announced that the final night lantern walks of the season through Pilssala will take place on September 12 and 26. The three-hour guided walk, called "Night Lantern Walk in Pilssala," will take visitors through the Lielupe river floodplain meadows accompanied by guide Einārs Nordmanis.
The walk will begin at 9 p.m. and both start and finish near the Jelgava water tourism and sports base at Pilssalas iela 5.
What participants will see
During the outing, visitors will learn more about the wild horses that live in the meadows, as well as rare plant and bird species found in the area. There will also be an opportunity to ask the guide questions.
Because the number of participants is limited, organizers are urging interested people to sign up in advance.
Advice for participants
Organizers recommend dressing appropriately for the walk and wearing closed footwear. Each participant must bring their own lantern.
JRTC notes that the Lielupe floodplain meadows are natural meadows that are never mowed — instead, the grass is kept short by grazing horses. The area is rich in plant and animal diversity, though visitors should also be prepared for mosquitoes and horseflies.
