Jelgava Lielupe Secondary School to join cultural and civic participation project
Jelgava Lielupe Secondary School has been selected for a European Social Fund Plus project that uses cultural events to encourage civic participation. The school will focus on young people's daily lives without smartphones.

Jelgava Lielupe Secondary School has been chosen to take part in the European Social Fund Plus project "Cultural Events as a Tool for Promoting Civic Participation," run by the Latvian National Centre for Culture. The information comes from the Jelgava Education Board.
In total, 44 educational institutions from 29 municipalities applied to the project, and 20 schools were selected.
Focus on life without a smartphone
Within the project, Lielupe Secondary School will look at young people's everyday lives without a smartphone and at ways to spend time meaningfully when a screen is not available. The school notes that over the past two years, since smartphone use has been restricted, questions about communication between students, relationships, loneliness, boredom and the ability to organise one's own time independently have become more pressing.
Cooperation and the search for solutions
During the project, the school will work with cultural professionals and other educational institutions, explore different cultural events and look for solutions to the identified problems. Students are also expected to be involved: together with teachers and experts, they will study the issue, hold discussions and develop possible solutions.
Timeline and sharing experience
The project is scheduled to run until the end of 2029. It also provides for cooperation between teachers and cultural professionals, and the experience gained will be compiled and passed on to other educational institutions.
